Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME)

Overview

The three-day BCME Workshop was organized at Navodaya Medical College, Raichur, from 15th to 17th September 2025. The course is an NMC-mandated Faculty Development Program to enhance teaching competencies, assessment skills, and curriculum implementation in alignment with CBME (Competency-Based Medical Education) principles. The resource faculty included members of the MEU and experienced teachers from relevant sources.

Program Structure

Day 1: Foundations of Medical Education

• Introduction & Group Dynamics: Interactive group sessions, pre-test, faculty introductions led by Dr. Bande Nawaz

• Principles of Learning & Domains: Concepts of learning, domain hierarchy, and teaching conducted by Dr. Kajal B

• Competency-Based Education: Goals, roles, competencies, and Learning Objectives (LOs) highlighted by Dr. Vishal Salve

• Teaching-Learning Methods (TLMs): Large and small group interactive methods by Dr. Ashraf Ahmed Zubair and Dr. Anand Kumar H

• Introduction to Assessment & Internal Assessment: Types, attributes, utility, and formative feedback processes by Dr. Madhavi Ajit Kulkarni and Dr. Usha Hirevenkanagoudar

Day 2: Skill Building & Assessment Blueprinting

• AETCOM & SDL: Implementation of Attitude, Ethics & Communication (AETCOM) and Self-Directed Learning (SDL) by Dr. Prasanna N and Dr. Shruti Kulkarni

• Clinical Skills Teaching: Workplace-based learning and skills lab utilization conducted by Dr. Usha H and Dr. Vishalakshi Patil

• Aligning Teaching Methods to Competencies: TLM-objective mapping by Dr. Anand Kumar H

• Assessment Planning/MCQ and Essay Writing: Blueprinting assessments and quality item construction by Dr. Ashraf Zubair and Dr. Madhavi Kulkarni

Day 3: Educational Growth & Networking

• Lesson Planning: Developing lesson plans according to objectives and TLMs by Dr. Kajal B P

• Clinical Skill Assessment Stations: OSCE/skill station design by Dr. Vishalakshi Patil and Dr. Ajay J

• Academic Growth/Networking: MEU’s role and faculty advancement by Dr. Bande Nawaz

• Mentoring Principles & Scheduling: Mentoring strategies and time-table design led by Dr. Shruthi Kulkarni and Dr. Prasanna

• Program Closure: Feedback, post-test, and wrap-up by Dr. Usha H

Participants

The workshop included over 30 faculty members from multiple departments: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Pediatrics, Medicine, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Surgery, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, and Anesthesiology. All participants are registered with medical councils and have provided necessary qualifications. Outcome and Recommendations

The BCME workshop equipped faculty members with essential skills in CBME curriculum design, assessment blueprinting, and modern teaching-learning strategies. The event fostered interdepartmental collaboration, networking, and laid down a framework for future orientation and mentoring programs.

Post-test assessment and feedback were obtained from all participants to ensure effective learning and program improvement. The presence and observations of Dr. Vinod Prabhusetty provided further alignment with NMC standards and regulatory compliance.
