To commemorate Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed annually on May 28, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Navodaya Medical College, organized a series of menstrual hygiene awareness sessions from May 25 to May 29 across institutions under the Navodaya group. The sessions were conducted at Navodaya College of Nursing, Navodaya Institute of Technology, and Navodaya College of Education, with the aim of promoting awareness about menstrual health and hygiene among young women.

More than 400 students and faculty members participated in the program. The sessions were led by faculty members Professor Dr Harish babu, Assistant Professor Dr Shaheeda and Dr Roshini and postgraduate students Dr Teja B S and Dr Pooja Vasu from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, who provided scientifically accurate information on menstruation, menstrual hygiene practices, and reproductive health.

The speakers emphasized the importance of maintaining good menstrual hygiene through the proper use of sanitary products, regular changing of absorbent materials, personal cleanliness, and safe disposal of menstrual waste.
A key objective of the program was to address and dispel common myths and misconceptions associated with menstruation. Despite increasing awareness, menstruation continues to be surrounded by stigma and misinformation in many communities. Through interactive discussions and question-and-answer sessions, participants were encouraged to view menstruation as a normal physiological process and to challenge long-standing taboos that often limit open conversations on the subject.

The awareness sessions also highlighted the importance of recognizing menstrual health concerns and seeking appropriate medical advice when necessary. Students were encouraged to communicate openly about menstrual health issues and support one another in fostering a positive and informed approach to menstrual well-being.

The enthusiastic response from participants reflected the need for continued education on menstrual health. The interactive format allowed attendees to clarify doubts, gain practical knowledge, and engage in meaningful discussions with healthcare professionals.

Through this initiative, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology reaffirmed its commitment to promoting women’s health and community awareness. The programme was organized with the objective of creating awareness regarding mental health issues affecting women during the postpartum period and enhancing understanding among healthcare professionals and students about the importance of early identification and management of postpartum psychiatric disorders.

The guest lecture was held on 5th May 2026 at the Virtual Library, AV Hall, NET, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The event was conducted under the guidance of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and was attended by faculty members, postgraduate students, interns, and undergraduate students.

The programme was presided over by Dr. Gurudatta S. Pawar, Dean and Principal, NMCH & RC. The organizing chairperson for the event was Dr. Sarada B., Professor and Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The distinguished resource person for the session was Dr. Manasa N., Senior Resident, Department of Psychiatry. The topic of the guest lecture was “Postpartum Depression and Psychosis.” The speaker delivered an informative and insightful lecture highlighting the psychological changes occurring during the postpartum period, risk factors associated with postpartum depression and psychosis, clinical presentation, early warning signs, screening methods, and the importance of timely referral and multidisciplinary management.

The session emphasized the growing significance of maternal mental health in obstetric practice and the need for healthcare providers to adopt a holistic approach while caring for pregnant and postpartum women. The lecture also focused on reducing the stigma associated with psychiatric illnesses and stressed the importance of family support, counselling, and early psychiatric intervention in improving maternal outcomes.

The programme witnessed active participation from students and faculty members. An interactive discussion session was conducted at the conclusion of the lecture, during which participants clarified their doubts regarding diagnosis, counselling, management protocols, and long-term follow-up of affected patients. The session proved to be highly educational and beneficial for all attendees, particularly postgraduate students, as it enhanced their knowledge regarding an important yet often under-recognized aspect of obstetric care.

The programme was conducted with the objective of enhancing the academic knowledge and surgical understanding of postgraduate students, interns, undergraduate students, and faculty members in the field of minimally invasive gynaecological surgery.

The event was organized under the guidance of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and witnessed active participation from faculty members, postgraduate students, interns, and undergraduate students. The programme was presided over by Dr. Gurudatta S. Pawar, Dean and Principal, NMCH & RC, and coordinated by Dr. Sarada B., Professor and Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The distinguished resource person for the programme was Dr. Jayaprakash B. Patil, renowned Laparoscopic and Pelvic Surgeon, Founder of Bettadur Group of Hospitals, and Chairman and Managing Director of Bettadur Hospital Pvt. Ltd., Raichur. The topic of the guest lecture was “Step-by-Step Approach to Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy.”

During the lecture, the speaker delivered a highly informative and practical presentation on the surgical principles and operative techniques involved in Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH). Important aspects discussed during the session included patient selection, preoperative preparation, laparoscopic pelvic anatomy, port placement, instrumentation, operative steps, intraoperative precautions, management of complications, and postoperative care. The lecture provided a detailed stepwise explanation of the procedure, which proved highly beneficial for postgraduate students and young surgeons interested in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery.

Special emphasis was placed on safe surgical practices, identification of important anatomical landmarks, prevention of ureteric and vascular injuries, and the role of surgical expertise in improving patient outcomes. The speaker also shared valuable clinical experiences and practical tips that helped participants gain deeper insight into advanced laparoscopic procedures and contemporary surgical approaches.

An interactive discussion session was conducted at the end of the lecture, during which students and faculty members actively clarified their doubts regarding operative techniques, indications for laparoscopic hysterectomy, surgical decision-making, and complication management. The session proved to be academically enriching and contributed significantly towards strengthening the surgical understanding and clinical confidence of the participants.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology organized a guest lecture on “Management of Traumatic and Atonic Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) by Two Novel Techniques” on 12th November 2025.

The session was delivered by Dr. Ramalingappa C Antarathani, MD (OBG), Professor and Former Director of KIMS, Hubballi, who shared his extensive expertise in managing complex cases of PPH. The lecture focused on innovative approaches to traumatic and atonic PPH, highlighting practical techniques, clinical protocols, and evidence-based strategies to improve maternal outcomes.

This academic session provided valuable learning for faculty, postgraduate students, and clinical staff, enhancing their knowledge and skills in obstetric emergency care.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology actively participated in the 35th Annual State Conference of KSOGA, held in November 2025, hosted by the Tumkur Obstetrics and Gynecology Society and the Department of OBG, Sri Siddhartha Medical College, Tumkur.

Dr. Durgadas Asranna served as the Organising Chairperson for the conference. The department was represented by Dr. Rita D, Professor & HOD, along with six postgraduate students. Among them, three postgraduates presented research papers and three postgraduates presented posters, demonstrating the department’s strong academic engagement and research contribution.

This participation provided valuable exposure to current advances in obstetrics and gynecology, fostering knowledge exchange and professional development.

Faculty members and postgraduate students from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology are posted on a rotational basis at the Mother and Child Hospital, ensuring uninterrupted patient care while providing comprehensive hands-on clinical training to postgraduate students.

Despite working with limited resources, the department has demonstrated exceptional dedication to maternal and child health services. In recognition of these efforts, the department was commended by the District Health Officer for delivering high-quality patient care and successfully conducting over 1,200 deliveries within a single year.

Postgraduate students of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology actively participated in academic events, presenting eight research papers and two posters, and taking part in quiz competitions at various conferences.

In addition, Dr. Rita D, Professor and Head of the Department, served as a Chairperson for two sessions at the state-level KSOGA conference held in Bidar in August 2025, reflecting her academic leadership and contribution to professional forums.

Postgraduate students of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, under the guidance of Dr. Rita D, Professor and Head of the Department, actively participated in paper presentations, poster presentations, and quiz competitions at various state-level and zonal conferences of KSOGA, securing multiple prizes for their academic excellence.

Notably, the department presented three research papers and three posters at Yuvaga KSOGA, held in Chitradurga in April 2025, showcasing the research aptitude and academic commitment of the postgraduate students.

These achievements reflect the department’s strong emphasis on research, mentorship, and academic development.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology successfully conducted a webinar on 13th September 2025 on the topic “Role of Carbetocin in Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH)”, in collaboration with Hetero Health Care.

The session was delivered by Dr. Rita D, Professor and Head of the Department of OBG, who provided an in-depth overview of the role of Carbetocin in the prevention and management of PPH. The lecture covered various aspects of PPH management, including clinical protocols, evidence-based practices, and practical considerations in obstetric care.

The webinar concluded with an engaging panel discussion and interactive question-and-answer session involving postgraduate students and faculty members. This interaction proved highly beneficial in enhancing participants’ understanding and guiding them toward effective and timely management of postpartum hemorrhage.

The webinar contributed significantly to academic learning and clinical preparedness in obstetric emergency care.
