The Department of Microbiology, Navodaya Medical College, Raichur, under the aegis of Sri S. R. Reddy, Hon’ble Chairman, NET, Raichur, and in collaboration with the Medical Education Unit, organized a Guest Lecture on the topic “The Evolution of Laboratory Systems for Managing Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in India” on 13th September 2025 at the A.V. Hall, NET Library Building.
The guest lecture was delivered by Dr. Jnaneshwara K. B., Assistant Professor of Microbiology, KR Hospital, Mysore Medical College & Research Centre, Mysuru.
Proceedings of the Lecture
Dr. Jnaneshwara, in his address, provided a comprehensive overview of the progressive development of India’s laboratory systems for Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (DR-TB). He highlighted the significant transition from:
-
Traditional microscopy and culture methods
-
To advanced molecular diagnostics such as Line Probe Assays (LPA), Cartridge-Based Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (CBNAAT/Xpert), and TrueNat platforms
-
Culminating in the recent emphasis on genomic surveillance
He explained how these technological advancements have played a crucial role in reducing diagnostic delays and facilitating early initiation of appropriate treatment.
The lecture also emphasized current investments being made, including:
-
Scaling up TrueNat
-
Expanding LPA facilities
-
Integrating laboratory data with Nikshay
-
Implementing national sequencing programs to strengthen DR-TB control efforts
In addition, the resource person addressed the key challenges that remain in the system, including:
-
Ensuring equitable access to rapid diagnostics across diverse geographic regions
-
Sustaining quality assurance within a vast and decentralized laboratory network
-
Translating genomic data into routine clinical and programmatic decision-making
Remarks by Dignitaries
The session was enriched by the presence of distinguished dignitaries:
-
The Guest Lecture was organized under the leadership of Dr. Rajeshwari R. S., Professor & Head, Department of Microbiology, Navodaya Medical College, Raichur (Program Director).
-
