“Community Ophthalmology: DBCS and Disability Care” Dated 21st February 2026
As a part of continuing medical education among health professionals, the Department of Ophthalmology, Navodaya medical college hospital & research centre (NMCH&RC), Raichur in coordination with District Health and Family welfare office has organised “Community Ophthalmology: DBCS and Disability Care” on 21st February 2026 from 8am to 5pm in Dr S.R. Hegde Silver Jubilee auditorium hall, Navodaya Campus.
The Programme started after a brief inauguration ceremony. The inaugural function was Chaired by Dr T. Srinivas, Registrar, Navodaya Education Trust (NET). Dr Surendra Babu District Health and Family Welfare Officer was Distinguished Guest. Dr Amruth Reddy, Director of Operations, NET, Dr Arun K N, Medical Superintendent, Navodaya Medical College Hospital, Dr Vishal Salve, Officiating Principal, Navodaya Medical College, Dr Anupama Taklikar, Organizing Chairperson, HOD, Department of Ophthalmology, NMCH&RC, Dr Vasudev Jahagirdar, ENT Surgeon, KMC Observer were among the other dignitaries on the dais. Dr Narayana Pendlikal, RMO, NMCH&RC, Faculty of Ophthalmology department – Dr Sharanabasamma, Professor, Dr Reshma, Professor, Dr Lavan Kumar, organizing Secretary, Assistant professor, Dr Kanchana BK, Assistant professor, Dr Vaibhav, Cornea consultant, Dr Shwetha G, Senior Resident, Dr Apoorva D, Senior Resident and HODs of various departments were among the other dignitaries.
Dr Sunrendra Babu, appreciated Navodaya Medical college for successful implementation of DBCS since 2003. He spoke about steps to be taken to prevent blindness and coordination between health department and medical college to take measures in promotion of community awareness regarding eye care and prevention of blindness.
Dr Srinivas T has addressed the gathering. He on behalf of Navodaya Educational trust promised free eye care for poor and needy in coordination with District Health Office. He proudly announced that Department of Ophthalmology, NMCH&RC have successfully operated more than 25000 cataract cases under DBCS since 2003, and collected more than 100 eye donations since 2011 through which more than 100 blind people have benefited. He also brought to the notice that more than 500 cataract cases were operated for free under Navodaya educational trust.
Guest speakers Dr Nandita, RCHO, District Health Office, Raichur; Dr Geetamani, retd professor, NMCH&RC, Raichur; Dr Anant Takalkar, Professor, Community Medicine, MIMSR Medical College, Latur delivered extensive and informative lectures regarding Burden of blindness in India, DBCS, Visual rehabilitation and Comprehensive Ocular screening. Later on workshop was conducted on how ocular screening to be conducted and services to be delivered under DBCS.
Ophthalmologists from various parts of Karnataka,Telangana and Andhrapradesh, Postgraduates of department of Ophthalmology and Optometrists from NMCH&RC Raichur, RIMS Raichur, GIMS Gulbarga, BMC&RC (VIMS) Ballari, SNMC, Bagalkot and KBNU Gulbarga and ophthalmic officers/optometrists, Asha workers from Raichur district actively participated in CME/Workshop.
