Date: 9th June 2026
Venue: Lecture Hall 04, Navodaya Medical College
Submitted by: Dr. Bande Nawaz, Coordinator, Medical Education Unit (MEU) & Professor and HOD of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology
Overview and Background
I am pleased to present the official report for the special academic session on “The Future of Medicine in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” which we successfully conducted on Tuesday, 9th June 2026. Recognizing that the future physician must seamlessly combine medical knowledge with AI-assisted decision-making, I coordinated this event in close collaboration with the Academic Development and Research (ADR) Cell and the Medical Education Unit (MEU).
Our goal was to sensitize our future medical professionals to the emerging technologies that will undeniably shape healthcare delivery over the coming decade.
Event Proceedings
The session witnessed an outstanding turnout, attended by exactly 400 students from the Phase I MBBS and Phase III Part I MBBS cohorts.
Welcome & Introduction
The event commenced at 10:15 AM with a formal welcome address by Dr. Ashraf Ahemad Zubair. Dr. Zubair also expertly introduced our esteemed resource person for the day, Mr. Uma Desu, a Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, GenAI Pioneer, and renowned AI educator and mentor.
Facilitation
The seamless execution of the event was facilitated by Dr. Prasanna, who ensured the session remained interactive and impactful for the large student audience.
Session Highlights
During the lecture, Mr. Uma Desu provided a comprehensive overview of how AI is transforming major medical specialties, including Radiology, Cardiology, Oncology, Pathology, Neurology, Critical Care, and Precision Medicine.
As I observed the students’ reactions, it was clear that the session effectively delivered on its key outcomes:
- Understanding the role of AI in improving diagnostics, treatment planning, and overall patient outcomes.
- Exposure to real-world medical AI innovations, predictive healthcare, and intelligent patient monitoring systems currently deployed in hospitals worldwide.
- Exploration of emerging career opportunities at the intersection of Medicine, Data Science, and AI.
Mr. Desu made it abundantly clear to our students that AI is not here to replace clinical expertise, but to empower it. A resonant takeaway from his presentation that struck a chord with the audience was:
“The next generation of doctors will not compete against AI. They will compete against doctors who use AI.”
Conclusion and Acknowledgements
The session successfully bridged the gap between traditional medical education and the rapidly evolving, tech-driven healthcare ecosystem. It was highly beneficial for our student community, equipping them with the awareness required to lead, rather than simply follow, the impending transformation in medicine.
Vote of thanks was given by Dr. Bande Nawaz.
I extend my sincere gratitude to the Dean/Principal for issuing the necessary circulars, to all the Heads of Departments for relieving the students from their scheduled clinical postings and theory classes, and to my colleagues in the MEU and ADR—especially Dr. Zubair and Dr. Prasanna—for their unwavering support in organizing this monumental session.
