Radio Talk on Diabetes Mellitus in India: Prevalence, Complications, Management and Lifestyle Modifications
Diabetes mellitus is a major public health concern in India, with a steadily increasing number of people affected. Urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy dietary habits, obesity, and increasing life expectancy have contributed to its rising prevalence. Early screening and timely diagnosis are essential for effective prevention and management.
Uncontrolled diabetes can affect multiple organs and lead to serious complications, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, diabetic retinopathy, neuropathy, diabetic foot problems, and increased susceptibility to infections. Early detection and appropriate treatment can help prevent or delay these complications.
Effective diabetes management includes regular monitoring of blood glucose and HbA1c, appropriate medications, medical follow-up, and adherence to treatment. Patient education is essential for achieving good glycaemic control.
Lifestyle modification plays a central role in diabetes prevention and management. A balanced diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, pulses, and fibre, with appropriate portion control, should be encouraged. Regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy body weight, adequate sleep, stress management, and avoidance of tobacco and excessive alcohol are important.
Through early detection, healthy lifestyle practices, appropriate treatment, and regular monitoring, diabetes-related complications can be reduced and quality of life improved.
